In my home workshop, I make or modify parts for old or rare vehicles, I also get asked to make "one off" unusual devices and prototype items. As I work on these items, I record the process I went through to achieve the final product (when my clients allow), I always show you what I went through to get the job done. I will never tell you how to do anything, because everybody's home workshop and skill level is different.
I am a retired heavy machine operator from the turbogenerator, locomotive and mining side of engineering. I retired after 31years. My skills involved vertical boring (3' to 14' (1mtr to 6.6mtr)), large milling (20mtr x 5mtr x 4 cutter), 6Mtr centre grinder and many other machines in between.

This video is a follow on (forgive the pun) from my last videos 'Making a steady rest (pt1-2) I hope you enjoy. In this video, I show you how I completed my steady rest (part2). The microphone gave up the ghost and I was forced to change it, you will notice differences during my voiceover and edits,… I do hope this doesn’t spoil the video too much. I am now feeling much better since coming down with Covid, and my normal service should resume.

In this video, I show you how I made a steady rest for my South Bend 13 lathe, using whatever materials I had to hand. During this time I also made a lantern style tool post, shown in one of my previous videos, before I came down with Covid, I'm feeling a bit better now, Please bear with me on this build I haven't managed to explain myself very well for which I apologise. I hope you enjoy watch...
Fixing a Clutch Master Cylinder
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.9 месяцев назад
In this video, I repair a clutch master cylinder circlip groove. It nearly ended in tears when the material moved in the jaws, fortunately I was able to rectify the issue and save the day, in more ways than one. Just as I finished this repair I have received another rushed job, repairing some bonnet (hood) hinges. Maybe I can get back to working on the steady rest after that. Cheers
Making a Lantern Style Tool Post
Просмотров 8 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Hi. In this video I show you how I made a lantern style tool post. I wanted one of these tool posts so I could use a bunch of old style tool holders on my south bend lathe. The square tool holder that came with my lathe can't take these tools, they are too big. Having a lantern style tool post will allow me to use them. I gave up trying to buy one from an auction site because they are asking to...
My Motorhome gear link repair..

This is where I show you what I went through to fix a gear shift issue on my 32 year old Fiat Motorhome. I still have lots of projects in the pipeline and lots of repeat work to do. The repeat work takes time to do and I still have chores to to. No chores mean - no brownie points and no brownie points means - no time in the shed. So please bear with me If I am a little slow in releasing new vid...

Making Extended Studs.
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Год назад
This is a short video about a set of studs that I was asked to modify. These studs needed the 6mm threaded screw replaced with 1/4"BSF screws. They belong to a modern special puller set that will assist the owner of a classic Triumph Tiger, to remove a component from the engine without scratching it, if this simple modification is made. A simple enough task, some might even say, a task unworthy...
Fixing my 3 jaw chuck

After my previous video I couldn't get on with anything else until I'd looked at the issue I had with my 3 jaw Taylor chuck. I also give you a quick look at my new rotary 3 phase converter after it had been wired in (this is shown after the main video). I hope you enjoy, cheers.
My South Bend 13 Update
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.Год назад
In this video, I show you how the lathe handled the first few tentative cuts. but to start with I found out that either both 3 jaw chucks have problems or the spindle is bent. When the 4 jaw chuck was put on, the set up went well and the setting bar indicated that the spindle might be OK. The tailstock was also set up at the same time, but I didn't bother showing that because the video was abou...

Making a Straight Edge (south bend part 2)
why didn't you just taper the mandrel?
Hi, I couldn't taper the mandrel because the bearings are parallel and they have to be set under a certain amount of preload inward toward the centre of the bearing unit. A tapered mandrill would have been fine if the bearings weren't there but, I wasn't prepared to take them out. Cheers.
Well done!
Hi, Thank you. Cheers
Wouldn't it have been possible to just use the wheel mounting flange bolted to your faceplate?
Hi. Yes the face plate can be use but, not in this case. The face plate has an even number of slots and the hub has an uneven number of stud mountings. The mandrel was the second option, in the video I would have used the the four jaw chuck as first choice but, I explained why that couldn't be used. Cheers
Very nice work.
Hi, thanks, Cheers
A Sub-Worthy video Thank you. Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd House On the Left
Hi, Thanks for the sub, I am in the process of trying to sell my home to move to better premisses. Until then, my content will be a bit sparse, sorry. Cheers
@@Thesheddweller Thanks for the update. I'll leave the porch light on so no worries. May your next "shed" be lined with gold..
Slightly confused You said you don't have a slotter then move straight to the shaper? Virtually a slotter with a tooling change, I do know that a vertical slotter is handy for slotting since I have one but don't have a shaper yet ruclips.net/video/RG3Zgg20w6A/видео.htmlsi=HgToQoppVW1uEQhw Would like to apprentice machining from you, seems your disposition would suit being great teacher
Hi, I'm writing this reply again, because I can't confirm whether I sent the previous reply, sorry if I repeat myself. I always say that there's nothing new in machining, just variations of old techniques. I'm sorry about the confusion, I do have a shaper but, I don't have a (vertical) slotter (like the very big one we used at work) and I would like a small version, because it would remove the danger of leverage fracture that was close to happening in that video you invited me to watch above. My problem is while making these videos I forget to fully explain what I mean because there's no-one to question or query what I mean. sorry for the confusion. Cheers
@@Thesheddweller no problem
well done with the mandrel
Hi, thanks. cheers.
A very good job sir! Well thought out and executed and four tenths is pretty good, no in fact it's bloody good!
Hi, thank you, cheers
ARE YOU IN YOUR NEW SHOP ?
Hi, we've not sold our home yet, local and national politics, have put a stop to many house sales. looks like i may have to stay put for a while. cheers.
@@ThesheddwellerWe thought we had found the ideal downsize house for us, offer accepted and everything. But planning wouldn't let me demolish the old concrete garage 18x26ft and build a new concrete one 22x40ft. Plenty of room, mostly hidden by trees, it had to be built in natural York stone with a slate tiled roof and no bigger than the old one. We pulled out of the sale.
@@billdoodson4232 good job you found out before you completed. there is always the concrete slab with a sectional shed on top so long as it remains classed as a remove-able shed. etc etc.
Great stuff Paul! A pleasure to watch. "Thanks"👍
Hi, thank you, cheers
good to keep the old motors on the road. novel way of approaching it.
Thank you, cheers
Muito bom o trabalho!

interesting

Nice work, great idea.👍👍💯
Thank you, cheers.
Very nice approach to what can be a tricky project on the home lathe. Enjoyed very much, thanks and cheers!
Thank you, cheers
A job well done. Thanks for the video.
Nicely done Paul. I like the way you did that extra work to get amazing results.
Modern drum brakes were invented by a french, nazi sympathizer...
Thanks for the nice shout out, Paul. Much appreciated. And your mandrel setup was a good idea. Very nice result.
thanks, you are very welcome.
hello, mr hopewell, i was wondering, how does the epoxy hold on your lathe bed ? cheers ben.
when it was first pressed into action and well oiled, it left a dirty residue but it has settled down quite nicely thank you. cheers.
very nice, I bet braking on the car they came from sounds a lot nicer now
they sure will. regards
Great job, but you do know oriellys will turn these for 20bucks? I'd rather pay the money than clean sandy cast iron off my lathe.
20 bucks and a further 100 for postage. It was something to do and I got mucky in the process. all part of the fun I guess. cheers
@@Thesheddweller lol, yeah I forgot.you don't have those where you live. I've got a set of 13inch drums I need to do now, but there is no way I'm pulling the gap bed section out of my lathe. Too much work and I hate cleaning up cast iron.
Spot on 😊
Nice one Paul !!! Good result there. Last time I tried that I had issues. Think the drums had been cooked a few times and couldn't get a finish, bit of a badgers bottom! Bit of hemorrhoid cloth sorted it though😊 Love to Mrs. Shed Dweller and to your self Neil
ayeup, how's everyone in the slow lane. more importantly when you getting back in your shop?
@@Thesheddweller Might be a while Paul. Can't stand or walk for more than a few minutes. Just waiting on surgery. The drugs I'm taking for CH damaged my pancreas so I'm trying to manage diabetes as well. Be back in there one day though 😊😊😊

Hi Sir!! I follow you in all your videos, from Argentina. I have got 2 lathes, as old as yours. All of them are in bad conditions as yours too. Im tring to fix them up. One off them is a Leopoldo Pontiggia 1951. The other is an Argentinian brand, with poor quality. Tell my, my friend, after 2 years, how the epoxi fix works in your lathe bed? Does it works fine?
Hi, with the cast iron in the resin it is still holding up very well. regards
Had to watch this one again, a really great job at replacing that screw, it came out wonderfully!
Hi, It sure did turn out ok, but it was still a challenge especially during the square key forming process. cheers
Very nice design and Execution. Cheers😁

That’s a deluxe steady rest.sure does look like a casting
Love it mate, teach the younguns a thing or two.. especially love the bit about involuntary bowel movements as tool approaches chuck. Cause man 😂😂 I seen a guy on here "upgrade" his mini lathe motor to a ridiculous HP and he definitely needs this tool. I kept waiting for his parting off video after the upgrade as tiny brass knurled nut flies past his head into low Earth orbit...🤣🤣. I think this is a fantastic tool idea especially for people new to machining and experiencing the same apprehension of turning. So thanks for sharing it.
Cracking video and the right pace
Well done on the new quill and great vid
Great idea using the engraver for the graduation markings. It's hard enough to get through a complex project, but to layer on the added time and work of filming it as well. Thanks for making this
Nice work.
NIce solution. I would never have thought of pressing it in. I've been looking at my broken one for a while. I suppose I don't have a reason to postpone it any further.
